# Documentation over MCP (https://webmetic.de/docs/en/ki-assistent/dokumentation)

This documentation has an MCP server of its own. A connected AI client searches it, reads single pages and answers questions about Webmetic with the current content. At the end you have:

- an AI client that answers questions about Webmetic from this documentation, for example "How do I add the tracking code in Google Tag Manager?"
- in Claude Code or Codex, an agent that reads the API reference before it writes code for the Webmetic API

## Before you start [#before-you-start]

- **Time**: You enter one server address. No sign-in is needed.
- **Account**: You don't need a Webmetic account, because the documentation is public.
- **Access**: Your AI client has to support MCP servers over HTTP. ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Codex do.
- **Plan**: The server is free and uses no credits.

The server is at this address:

```text
https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
```

It offers three tools: `list_pages` lists all pages with their addresses, `get_page` returns one page as Markdown, and `search` searches the documentation in German or English. The server reads only this documentation and doesn't access your visitor data. For that, connect the [AI assistant](https://webmetic.de/docs/en/ki-assistent/einrichten).

Clients without MCP read the documentation as text: the index is at `https://webmetic.de/docs/llms.txt` and the whole documentation at `https://webmetic.de/docs/llms-full/en.txt`. You can also read every page as Markdown by appending `.md` to its address.

## Claude Code [#claude-code]

1. Run this command in your terminal:

   ```bash
   claude mcp add --transport http --scope user webmetic-docs https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
   ```

   Claude Code is now connected to the documentation. No sign-in is needed.

## Claude [#claude]

Claude on claude.ai and Claude Desktop use the same connector, so you set it up only once. The free Claude plan allows exactly one custom connector.

1. In Claude, open **Customize** > **Connectors**.
2. Click **+ Add**, then **Add custom connector**.
3. Enter "Webmetic Docs" as the name and this address as the server URL:

   ```text
   https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
   ```

4. Click **Continue**. Claude shows the sign-in settings it detected.
5. Click **Continue** again.
6. Under **Authentication**, select **No sign in**.
7. Click **Add**. Claude is now connected to the documentation.

In a chat, you turn the connector on or off under **+** > **Connectors**.

## ChatGPT [#chatgpt]

1. Open [ChatGPT Plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins).
2. Click the plus button, then **Add custom MCP server**.
3. Enter "Webmetic Docs" as the name.
4. Under **Connection**, enter this address in the **Server URL** field:

   ```text
   https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
   ```

5. For authentication, choose the option without sign-in.
6. Read the risk warning and click **I understand and want to continue**.
7. Click **Create as a plugin**.
8. Install the plugin from your personal plugins. ChatGPT is now connected to the documentation.

To have ChatGPT use the documentation, type `@` in a chat and select Webmetic Docs.

## Cursor [#cursor]

1. Open the file `~/.cursor/mcp.json`. For a single project, use `.cursor/mcp.json` in the project folder.
2. Add the server under `mcpServers`:

   ```json
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "webmetic-docs": {
         "url": "https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp"
       }
     }
   }
   ```

3. Save the file. Cursor shows the server on the **Customize** page, and no sign-in is needed.

## VS Code [#vs-code]

1. Open the command palette and run **MCP: Add Server**.
2. Select **HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events)**.
3. Enter this address:

   ```text
   https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
   ```

4. Enter `webmetic-docs` as the server ID.
5. Select **Global**, then **Copilot Global**, so the server applies in all projects. VS Code is now connected to the documentation.

## Codex [#codex]

1. Run this command in your terminal:

   ```bash
   codex mcp add webmetic-docs --url https://webmetic.de/docs/~/mcp
   ```

   Codex connects to the documentation without signing in.

## Check the connection [#check-the-connection]

Ask your AI client a question about Webmetic, for example "How do I add the tracking code in Google Tag Manager?". The client searches the documentation and answers with the steps from the [Google Tag Manager](https://webmetic.de/docs/en/installation/google-tag-manager) page.

### If the connection doesn't work [#if-the-connection-doesnt-work]

- The client answers without the documentation: Check that the server is turned on in the client. In Claude you turn it on under **+** > **Connectors**, and in ChatGPT you select it with `@`.
- The client reports that it can't reach the server: The address ends in `/docs/~/mcp`. Check the tilde and the slashes.

## Next steps [#next-steps]

- [Connect the AI assistant](https://webmetic.de/docs/en/ki-assistent/einrichten): Connect the same client with your Webmetic login so it reads your visitor data.
- [Claude plugin](https://webmetic.de/docs/en/ki-assistent/claude-plugin): Install the Webmetic plugin for Claude Code with its four skills.
- [API quickstart](https://webmetic.de/docs/en/api/schnellstart): Send your first request to the Webmetic API, with or without an account.
