How Smart Pages work

A Smart Page swaps texts on one page of your website for identified companies.

For example, when a machine builder from Bavaria opens your home page, their team sees a headline written for machine builders instead of the general headline.

Smart Pages change only texts, never images or the layout. The texts address companies, not individual people.

From the editor to your website

  1. 1Copy the pageWebmetic loads the page once and stores a copy for the editor.
  2. 2Pick elementsYou pick texts, for example the headline.
  3. 3Choose the methodFor each element you choose AI text per company or Your own text per audience.
  4. 4Install the codeThe Smart Pages code runs on your real page.
  5. 5Identify the companyOn every page load the code checks whether Webmetic identifies the company.
  6. 6Swap the textWebmetic picks the matching text, and the page shows it instead of the original.

A Smart Page belongs to exactly one page address, which Webmetic matches by domain and path. A leading www., parameters after the ?, and anchors after the # don't matter.

The Smart Pages code identifies the company itself and doesn't need the tracking code for that. Only the comparison figures in the report need it.

On every plan, you can design Smart Pages, preview them, and test them on your website. You can publish them and choose the AI text per company method only in the trial, the Growth plan, and Enterprise.

Smart Pages cost no credits.

Text selection

Each element uses exactly one of two methods, and the method decides which text an identified company sees:

  • Your own text per audience: the element shows the text of the first matching audience. If that audience has no text for the element, the original stays.
  • AI text per company: the element shows the AI text for this company. If no AI text exists, the original stays.

Visitors who Webmetic doesn't match to a company always see the original.

Audiences

An audience belongs to one Smart Page and describes companies by industry, employee count, revenue, location, campaign, or device. All criteria of an audience must match. Several values within one criterion are alternatives: with Germany and Austria, either country is enough.

Webmetic picks the audience again on every page view, and the first matching audience in your list wins. So a second page view without campaign parameters can match a different audience.

If the chosen audience has no text for an element, that element shows the original. This also applies when a later audience has a text.

There is no separate default text. To reach every identified company, add an audience without criteria at the end of the list, because it matches every identified company.

AI text

Webmetic writes the AI text for each company separately. This happens on the company's first visit or when you view the text in the preview.

After that, the text stays stored and appears on every later visit of that company. The AI uses what the visiting company does and keeps the message of your original.

An AI text is never longer than the original, so the layout of your page holds. AI texts are only created for elements from 45 characters, not for very long texts, and never for buttons and links.

You set the language with the Page language setting. After a switch, Webmetic rewrites every AI text on the page.

Nobody reviews the texts before they are delivered. Webmetic checks every text automatically afterwards and shows the original text again if the check fails.

Unchanged parts

On your website, only the selected elements change, and only for identified companies. These always stay the same:

  • Link targets: after the swap, a button leads to the same address as before.
  • Images and layout: images, forms, and the structure of the page don't change.
  • Hidden layers: the editor works on a copy. Whatever you hide there only applies in the editor and stays visible on your website.

Formatting inside an element is lost in the swap, for example a bold word or a link inside a paragraph. So pick elements without links and without formatting in the text.

Visitor view

VisitWhat appears on the page
Company not identifiedThe original, at once and without a change
Company identified, text availableThe element shows the new text
Company identified, no matching textThe original for this element
Identification slow or failedThe original
Text on the website changed since the copyThe current text of your website for this element

A hidden element keeps its space, so the page doesn't shift.

Campaign and device only apply to identified companies. Visitors without an identified company see the original, even if their campaign matches an audience.

Timing

The Smart Pages code swaps the texts while the page loads. That's why it has to sit as early as possible in the head of the page, as described in Install Smart Pages.

On a company's first visit, Webmetic still has to write the AI text. If it isn't ready in time, the original stays. Later visits of the same company get the stored text.

Changes to a Smart Page that is already live reach visitors after a short time. You only need to save the changes, not publish the page a second time.

Some websites load new content without loading the page again (single-page apps). There the text changes only when the page loads, not when someone moves around inside the app.

Editor copy

When you create a Smart Page, Webmetic loads the page once and stores a copy. In the editor you only work on this copy, which your visitors never see. The swap happens on your real page, in the visitor's browser.

Webmetic doesn't refresh the copy. If you later change a text on your website, the Smart Pages code no longer finds the original from the copy.

The element then shows the current text of your website, without a swap. Create the Smart Page for this page again and delete the old one as soon as the new one is live.
